SEO, GEO and AEO Research guide

What AEO means: answer engine optimization, not customs

GEO is the system. AEO is the page. If the first screen cannot be quoted, the rest of the page will not save it.

One capsule in the first position. The rest of the page can wait.

AEO is a three-letter pile-up. Customs officers mean Authorized Economic Operator. Slide decks mean “we added FAQ schema.” This page means answer engine optimization: writing one URL so an engine can lift a clean capsule.

If you landed here from a logistics query, leave. This is not that AEO.

The page, not the system

GEO is the system around the crawl: retrieve, interpret, extract, verify. AEO is the craft of one URL. The live capsule is blunt: they fail together when the first screen is a brand manifesto.

People use the words as synonyms because both showed up in the same Twitter thread in 2024. They are not synonyms. GEO without AEO is a crawl of pages nobody can quote. AEO without GEO is a beautiful capsule on a URL the crawler never fetched.

CITATION is the test of the result: was the page discoverable, attributed, answer-shaped, evidenced, and actually used? AEO is how you shape the page so that test can pass.

What the capsule needs

Four cheap objects. Not a framework expansion.

A direct answer near the top. The first two or three sentences should survive being stolen. If the claim is in paragraph eight, the engine will steal paragraph one anyway, and paragraph one is currently your mission statement.

Named entities. A person, an organisation, a dated object. “We” is not an entity. “Len P. van der Hof, 2026-08-19” is.

Visible sources. On the same URL. A footnote the crawler cannot fetch is not a source. It is a costume.

No invented FAQ schema. Google ended FAQ rich results on 2026-05-07 and pulled the documentation on 15 June 2026. A fake FAQPage is now a liability. It is not a shortcut to being quoted.

A page you can fail in five minutes

Fetch the HTML.

  1. Highlight the first 80 words. Is there a claim a stranger could repeat?
  2. Name the entity the machine should attach.
  3. Point at the evidence on this URL.
  4. Search the source for FAQPage. If you added it as a tactic after May 2026, delete it.

If step one fails, you do not have an AEO problem. You have an opening problem. Content architecture for answer engines is the longer operating page. GEO meaning is the system page. This page is the three-letter definition.

The Findability Engine owns the larger operating system. It is in production. It is not for sale. You do not need the hardcover to move the conclusion above the myth.
