SEO, GEO and AEO Research guide

AEO vs GEO vs SEO: three jobs, not three synonyms

If you use the three letters as synonyms, you will buy the wrong work and measure the wrong door.

Three separate workstations in one shop: a ranking ladder against a wall, a library retrieval desk, tweezers lifting one newspaper strip
Three jobs. Three benches. Not one tactic with extra letters.

Slide decks treat AEO, GEO, and SEO as one pile of letters. They are three jobs. Mixing them is how you buy schema theatre and then wonder why ChatGPT still will not name you.

GEO meaning and what AEO means stay the dictionary entries. This page is the comparison, including ordinary search.

The three jobs

SEO. Search engine optimization in the ordinary sense: can a search engine crawl, index, and rank the URL among ten blue links. Rankings, snippets, classic Search Console. It measures search discovery. It is not a prerequisite for a named citation elsewhere.

GEO. Generative engine optimization: becoming a source an answer engine can retrieve, interpret, extract, and verify. The system around the page. Crawlers, eligibility, original value, evidence that survives scrutiny. Not geography. Not a bag of hidden prompts.

AEO. Answer engine optimization: the craft of one URL. Direct answer near the top, named entity, visible sources, no invented FAQ schema. GEO without AEO is a crawl of pages nobody can quote. AEO without GEO is a capsule the crawler never fetched.

CITATION is the test of the result: was the page discoverable, attributed, answer-shaped, evidenced, and actually used?

If you landed here from customs (Authorized Economic Operator) or a map (geography), leave. Those are different letters.

You can rank and still be unnamed. You can be named from a URL that does not rank. Report them as three numbers. Why ChatGPT does not name you is the diagnosis when the answer engine is ChatGPT. Google’s generative reports measure Google.

One URL, three jobs

Take a single page: a consultancy’s /pricing-a-data-migration/, answering what a migration actually costs and why.

The SEO job is that the page exists in the index, sits in the internal link graph, and competes for the query people type. Artefact: an indexed URL. Failure: it is orphaned, or the title targets “our approach” while the query is “cost.”

The GEO job is that the relevant crawler can fetch it, no login gate, no noindex, and that the page carries something a commodity page does not: a dated method, real inputs, evidence you can point at. Artefact: a fetch in your access logs and a page that survives a verification pass. Failure: a WAF rule drops the crawler and nobody ever looks at the logs.

The AEO job is the first 80 words. A direct answer to the cost question, the organisation named, the date visible, the evidence on the same URL. Artefact: a capsule a stranger could lift verbatim. Failure: the first screen is “we believe migrations should be human.”

Now read the combinations, because they are where the money goes:

  • SEO passes, AEO fails. You rank, and answers summarise your topic without you. Ranking did not make the page quote-shaped.
  • AEO passes, GEO fails. A perfect capsule nobody fetched. You will conclude the writing is wrong. The writing is fine.
  • GEO passes, SEO fails. You get named from a page that does not rank. That is a legitimate outcome and it is exactly why you cannot report one number.

Three numbers, three places

Do not blend them into a “visibility score.”

  1. Rankings. Search Console. Impressions, clicks, position. This measures search, and Google’s generative reports measure Google, not ChatGPT.
  2. Eligibility. Your own server access logs, filtered by the crawler you care about, plus the current robots.txt on the live host. You own this measurement, even though you do not control when a crawler arrives.
  3. Citations. A prompt set you wrote, run in the answer engines you care about, logged with a date and an outcome per prompt. Referral traffic can corroborate it when a referrer is present.

Number 3 is work, not a subscription. Five to ten prompts a real buyer would type, run more than once, logged. That is a research instrument. A vendor dashboard with no prompt list behind it is a chart of somebody’s sampling choices.

What to do on Monday

Pick one URL that should be stealable.

  1. SEO. Is it indexed? If not, the search job has failed. Record that separately.
  2. GEO. Is the relevant crawler allowed, and has it actually fetched the URL? Check robots.txt, then the logs. Recheck the engine’s publisher FAQ, not a Twitter thread.
  3. AEO. curl the HTML. Claim, name, evidence in the first screen?

If 3 fails, do not buy a GEO package. Move the conclusion above the myth. Content architecture for answer engines is the longer page craft.

If 2 fails, open the door. Schema will not substitute.

If 1 fails, do ordinary search work. Do not use the SEO failure to infer anything about answer-engine eligibility.

How to read a proposal

When someone sells you “GEO,” ask which of the three jobs they are doing and what the artefact is. Real deliverables look like this:

  • A robots.txt before-and-after, plus a log check a week later showing the crawler arrived.
  • A named list of URLs with rewritten first screens: claim, entity, evidence, one per page.
  • A prompt set with dates and outcomes, run before the work and after it.

Theatre looks like this:

  • llms.txt as the deliverable. Google’s own AI optimization guide says it ignores that file for Search.
  • FAQ schema added as a tactic after May 2026.
  • Bought “mentions” on pages nobody reads, on the theory that volume is attribution.
  • A visibility score with no prompt list, no dates, and no method.

Either invoice can be expensive. Only one leaves you with something you can check yourself.

What not to do

Do not treat the three words as a maturity model (SEO then GEO then AEO). They run in parallel.

Do not invent FAQ schema as a shortcut. Google ended FAQ rich results on 2026-05-07.

Do not mix eligibility with citation. Being fetched is not being named.

The meaning pages stay short on purpose. Use this page when someone says “we need GEO” and means “add schema.” Ask which of the three jobs they are actually buying, and what they will hand you at the end of it.
