Literary agent or AI agent? A literary agent is a human representative. An AI agent is a system that takes a goal, uses tools, and acts across steps under a charter. This website is not a literary agency. It does not shop manuscripts. It does not take a commission on a book deal.

Two jobs, one English word
English borrowed “agent” for both a person who acts for you and a system that acts instead of a click. Dutch search does the same with “literair agent.” The collision is in the query, not in the professions.
A literary agent is a human who represents an author’s work to publishers, usually on commission. The work is relationships, taste, contract language, and a decision to take a manuscript on or not. That person can refuse you. That is the job. This page will not name a roster. Representation rules differ by country. This is not legal advice.
An AI agent, on this site, is software that holds a goal, uses tools, and continues across steps under a written charter. What is an AI agent? owns that definition. The charter is seven fields. Without them you have a demo that can spend money. A wrapper around a chat model is not this. Neither is a scheduled script.
They do not replace each other. A model will not take your nonfiction to a house. A literary agent will not call your payment API.
The mix-up

The failure shows up in two inboxes.
A writer emails a contact form, a chatbot, or a generic hello@ hoping a person will shop a manuscript. Nobody on this site does that work. The reply you want is a human at an agency, not a fluent paragraph from a model.
A founder says “we have an agent” and means a chat window with a plugin. Production credentials follow the word. AI agent or chatbot is the comparison for that slide. The three tests below still apply. If the system cannot refuse a tool call, it is not an agent you can run.
Three tests, still
- Does it hold a goal overnight?
- Does it use tools?
- Does it continue across steps without a human typing each one?
A literary agent fails all three as software, on purpose. That is the job. The human holds the goal, the relationships, and the refusal. You do not want that work automated into a send.
A chatbot that fails all three and still has production credentials is the failure mode on this site. Useful for drafting. Dangerous the moment you paste its output into a tool it cannot see.
Walk one object through both professions. “Find a Dutch house for this operator manuscript” is a literary-agent job. “Draft a one-page synopsis from the chapter map, then stop” can be an AI-agent job if someone wrote the ceiling: no send, no invented blurbs, a named reviewer who can fail the page. “Chat with me about my book until it feels ready” is a chatbot. Mixing the three is how a synopsis goes out as if a house had already said yes.
A search, a slide, a send
The search. “literair agent non fictie” wants a person. This domain publishes books and operator essays. The honest landing is this collision page, not a fake roster and not a sales funnel dressed as representation. If that was your query, you are in the wrong building. Use a directory that lists agencies. Do not send the manuscript to a tool.
The slide. A vendor titled a product “Agent” next to a photo of a person in a suit. The room now uses one word for a commission relationship and a model with a plugin. Vocabulary is the control. Loose vocabulary is how a chatbot inherits an API key.
The send. Someone pastes a chapter into a chat, likes the cover letter, and hits the mail tool because the system was called an agent. There was no charter, no authority ceiling, no named reviewer. That is not representation. That is an unreviewed send. The override doctrine is the refuse-line for software. A literary agent supplies the refuse-line in person.
What this site will do, and will not

What to do this week
Write one sentence that names the job you wanted when you typed the query.
If the sentence is “I need a human to take this manuscript to publishers,” stop using this site for that job. Find an agency through a directory that exists for that purpose. Do not paste the book into a chat and call it submitting.
If the sentence is “I need software that can draft, file, or research under a ceiling,” open What is an AI agent? and fill the seven fields before the tool that can send. If you cannot fill them, you do not have an agent. You have a demo.
If the sentence is “I mixed the words on a slide,” run the three tests on every system you currently call an agent. Fail them out loud. Rename the chatbot a chatbot. The literary meaning of the word can stay with the humans who still do that work.
