# Positioning is a decision, not a tagline

If the homepage still fits the people you refused, it is a tagline.

The position is the cloth you would not cut.

Direct answer

Positioning is a decision about who you will not serve and what you will not claim. A tagline is a sentence that can still fit everyone. A position is a refusal you can keep at the table, on the homepage, and in the company you would still want to run. The walk-away is part of the position: if you will take any logo and any discount to keep the conversation, the homepage is lying. The Negotiation Operator, The Meaning Operator, and The Authentic Operator are in production. None is for sale. The two lines are already usable: who you refuse, and the claim you will not make.

## Key takeaways

- Write who you will not serve. Write the claim you will not make. Blank lines are a tagline.
- A walk-away you cannot name is not a position. It is a hope that the next logo will clarify you.
- Meaning is also a refusal: the company you will not become just to keep motion.
- If you would not say the homepage sentence on a call, it is not a position. It is a costume.

The homepage says “for ambitious teams.” So does the next tab, and the one after that. The usual diagnosis is “we need a sharper tagline.” Often the position was never a decision. It was a sentence that refused no one.

## A position is a refusal you can keep

Write two lines.

Who you will not serve. The claim you will not make even if a buyer asks.

If either line is blank, you have copy. You do not have a position.

A tagline can still fit the people you already turned down. A position cannot. That is the test. It is not a slogan contest.

This page is not the go-to-market audit of the last ten customers. That audit asks what the names taught you. This page asks what you will refuse *next*, in public, before the next logo arrives.

## Walk-away is the position at the table

[The Negotiation Operator](https://lenvanderhof.com/books/the-negotiation-operator/) treats a deal as preparation, not as a personality test. The live back copy is the useful part here: separate positions from interests before the conversation becomes a contest, and prepare walk-away points without false certainty. The book is drafting English first. It is not for sale.

The walk-away is the position you take into the room. If you will take any logo, any segment, and any discount to keep the conversation, the homepage is lying. You already decided you have no position. You decided you have a hunger.

You do not need the eight-letter framework to write the walk-away. You need it if you want the full preparation. This page is the two lines.

Do not confuse a walk-away with a performance of toughness. The book is explicit that this is not a manual for dominance or manufactured pressure. A refusal you cannot explain is just a mood.

## Meaning is what you will not become

[The Meaning Operator](https://lenvanderhof.com/books/the-meaning-operator/) starts from a different refusal. Another goal can restore motion. It cannot explain why the motion matters. The book is drafting English first. It is not for sale.

A position that only exists to keep the company moving will accept any work that pays. That is how you wake up running a firm you would not apply to. The refusal here is the company you will not become, even if the inbound is flattering.

Meaning, in that book, is architecture you build and inspect, not one hidden answer you discover on a retreat. This page takes only that much. It does not install the seven domains, and it does not treat existentialism as a growth hack.

If the homepage sentence would still fit a company you would hate to run, it is a tagline. Rewrite the refusal, not the adjective.

## The sentence has to survive your name

[The Authentic Operator](https://lenvanderhof.com/books/the-authentic-operator/) is in design. It is not for sale. The ownership test is already enough.

If a model wrote the homepage and you would not say that sentence on a call, it is not a position. It is a costume. The conversion article is about the sequence. This page is about the one public sentence that the sequence is not allowed to outrun.

## A fifteen-minute audit

Pick the homepage line you would least like a journalist to read next to last quarter’s inbound.

1. Write who you refused last quarter, by type if you cannot name them.
2. Write the claim you will not make even if a buyer asks.
3. Write the walk-away: the deal you would decline at the price they named.
4. Put the homepage sentence next to those three lines. If it still fits the people and claims you refused, it is a position. If it would also fit them, it is a tagline.
5. Write whose name owns the next refusal.

If step 1 or 3 is blank, stop hiring a copywriter. You do not have a wording problem. You have not decided. Write the refusals. Then the sentence has something to stand on.
