# Is SEO dead? No. Answer engines turned it into the entry ticket

The AI answer still shops in the search index. Fewer people walk through the door afterwards.

The show moved to the stage. The door still checks your ticket.

Direct answer

No. SEO (search engine optimization) is not dead; it became the entry ticket for AI answers. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI says that for your content to appear in ChatGPT's search summaries, its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, must not be blocked. What changed is the click: people often get the answer without visiting, so measure citations and visits separately, in your own data.

## Key takeaways

- SEO is not dead. Crawling, indexing and snippet eligibility decide whether AI answers can use your page.
- Google: to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- OpenAI and Perplexity both ask you to allow their search crawler if you want to appear in their answers.
- What changed is the click. In Pew's March 2025 data, people clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without.
- Measure three numbers: search performance, AI referrals, and whether answers name you.

**No. SEO is not dead. Answer engines turned it into the entry ticket.** Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity all say in their own documentation that their AI answers draw on pages their crawlers are allowed to read, and Google adds that the page must be in its search index. A page that fails that basic search work is not in the running. What changed is what happens after the answer: people often get it without clicking.

## SEO, AEO and GEO in one line each

- **SEO (search engine optimization):** making a page easy for a search engine to crawl (read it with a crawler, the program it sends to fetch pages), index (keep it in its searchable store), and rank (show it high in results).
- **AEO (answer engine optimization):** writing a page so an AI answer tool can lift a clean, correct answer from it.
- **GEO (generative engine optimization):** the wider work of becoming a source that AI tools find, understand, quote, and credit.

One more term: a **snippet** is the short text preview a search engine shows from your page. It matters more now than it used to, as you will see.

The three are not a ladder where the next one replaces the last. [AEO vs GEO vs SEO](https://lenvanderhof.com/en/blog/aeo-vs-geo-vs-seo/) sets them side by side.

## Why is SEO not dead?

Because the AI still shops in the index. Start with Google, since its AI features sit inside its search engine: AI Overviews (the AI-written summary at the top of many results pages) and AI Mode (a separate search mode for longer questions, answered by AI with links). Its [guide to generative AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) asks whether SEO is still relevant and answers: “In short, yes! The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.”

The same guide explains how an AI answer is built: a retrieval step that relies on Google’s “core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index.” Then it states the entry rule. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, “a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.”

The snippet part has teeth. Google’s [documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag) says the `nosnippet` tag (an instruction not to show a text preview) also keeps a page’s content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Hide your preview and you have left the AI answer too.

Since 31 August 2026, every site in Search Console (Google’s free dashboard for site owners) also has a [separate switch](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16908024) for Google’s AI features. The default is to include your site. Excluding it removes your links and content from AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google says the switch is not used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search. The AI features sit on top of Search, not beside it.

The other engines say the same thing in their own words. OpenAI’s [crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler, “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.” [Perplexity’s documentation](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) says PerplexityBot “is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity” and recommends allowing it.

A fair objection: Google has a stake in Search, so of course it says SEO matters. That is why the strongest evidence here is not Google’s opinion but its written requirements, plus the matching rules from OpenAI and Perplexity. All three describe a gate that ordinary search work controls: their crawler must be allowed to read the page. Google adds indexing and snippet eligibility.

## The entry ticket, engine by engine

Robots.txt is the plain text file at the root of your site that tells crawlers what they may read. Here is what each engine documents.

EngineWhat reads your pageWhat the documentation requiresWhere it says soGoogle AI Overviews and AI ModeGooglebot (Google’s crawler), through the Google Search indexPage indexed and eligible for a snippet; site not excluded in Search ConsoleGoogle Search Central and Search Console HelpChatGPT searchOAI-SearchBotDo not block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txtOpenAI crawler overview and publishers FAQPerplexityPerplexityBotAllow PerplexityBot and its published IP addressesPerplexity crawler documentation

If the row for an engine fails, its documentation gives you no route into its search answers, whatever you write on the page.

## So what did change?

The click. The answer now often arrives before the visit.

[Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) tracked the web browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, for Google searches only. When a search page showed an AI summary, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits. Without a summary, they clicked on 15%. Links inside the summary itself got a click on just 1% of visits. People ended their browsing session after 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% without.

Two details keep this in proportion. First, most searches ended without a click on a search result anyway: around two-thirds of all searches in Pew’s data, with or without a summary. Second, Google’s own page says that when people do click from a results page with AI Overviews, “these clicks are higher quality (meaning, users are more likely to spend more time on the site).” Google gives no number there. Both can be true at once: fewer clicks, and different clicks.

That is the real change. A page can now be read, quoted, and trusted without a visit. Judge SEO only by traffic and you may conclude it died. Judge it by whether you are the source, and it clearly did not.

## What is not the new SEO?

MythWhat the documentation says”SEO is dead, do AEO instead.”Google: optimizing for generative AI search “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.""You need an llms.txt file for AI.”llms.txt is a proposed file that lists a site’s key pages for AI tools. Google says Search ignores it, and that it neither helps nor harms. OpenAI and Perplexity describe access through robots.txt, not llms.txt.”AI needs special schema markup.”Google: structured data (code that labels facts on a page for machines) is not required for its generative AI features, and there is no special schema.org markup to add.”Rewrite everything for robots.”Google: you do not need to write in a specific way for generative AI search.”Block GPTBot and you vanish from ChatGPT.”OpenAI: GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) are independent settings.

More on [what llms.txt is and is not](https://lenvanderhof.com/en/blog/what-is-llms-txt/), and on [OpenAI’s three crawlers](https://lenvanderhof.com/en/blog/gptbot-vs-oai-searchbot/).

## A four-line plan

1. **Ticket.** Confirm the page is indexed (Search Console’s URL Inspection tool shows what Googlebot received) and that robots.txt lets Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot in. No `nosnippet` on pages you want quoted.
2. **Answer.** Put the answer to the page’s main question in the first screen, with its main condition. [Answer-first writing](https://lenvanderhof.com/en/blog/answer-first-writing/) shows how.
3. **Proof.** Put the source, a named author, and a visible date next to the claim.
4. **Measure.** Track three numbers separately: search performance in Search Console, AI referrals in your analytics (ChatGPT adds `utm_source=chatgpt.com`, a tag that tells your analytics where a visit came from, to its links), and a monthly log of the questions you want to own, noting whether each answer names you.

On the first number: Search Console’s Performance report already counts appearances in Google’s AI features under the “Web” search type, and its Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites as of 31 August 2026, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (it stays empty if your site has too few impressions there). [AEO vs SEO](https://lenvanderhof.com/en/blog/aeo-vs-seo/) explains why the ranking number and the citation number move independently.

## Try this today (15 minutes)

1. Open Search Console and pick your page with the most impressions. (2 minutes)
2. Run it through URL Inspection. Is it indexed? (3 minutes)
3. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Check that Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot are not blocked. (5 minutes)
4. Ask that page’s main question in ChatGPT search and in Perplexity. Write down one word per engine: named, linked, or absent. (5 minutes)

If step 2 or 3 fails, you do not have an AI problem. You have an SEO problem, and it is the cheapest one to fix.
